Your first job, start to finish

A complete first Ditching job in order: the checklist, connect, Pre-Flight Checks, blade height, the benchmark decision, survey, Slope-IQ BestFit design, Save Design, grading with Auto-Nudge, and saving it to pick up again. Run it on the simulator first, then for real.

  • Full Automation Kit
  • Guidance Only Kit
  • Ditch Assist Lite

In the app Home › Ditching

This is a whole first job, a surface ditch, from the shop to the last pass. Every tap has its own step and picture. Do it once on the simulator at the kitchen table, then on the machine. The tablet part takes about 15 minutes, plus the driving.

Survey, design, grade, save and resume The loop every surface job follows, top to bottom. 1 Survey: drive the route and the app records the ground. Blade height plugs in here: it is only used while you survey. 2 Design: Slope-IQ or the workflow's design window builds the target grade. 3 Grade: the blade is worked to the target, automatically with a Full Automation Kit or by following the guide. 4 Save and resume: the job saves itself when you stop. An arrow loops from Save and resume back to Grade: on another day, calibrate on the benchmark first, then keep grading. Survey, design, grade 1 Survey Blade height 2 Design 3 Grade 4 Save & resume Next day: calibrate first
Every job runs the same loop: survey, design, grade, and pick it up again another day. Blade height matters while you survey; a benchmark matters when you come back.

First, a dry run on the simulator

Follow the steps below at home with Simulate instead of Connect. Everything works except the hydraulics, and you'll know every screen before you're in the cab. Practise with the simulator.

Before you start

Part 1: At the field

  1. Set up the base and leave it alone

Set the base on its spot and switch it on (or check your RTK network subscription is live). It stays exactly there, untouched, until you've finished grading. Base station.

  2. Start the machine

Check the control module's lights come on.

  3. Open the tablet's Wi-Fi list

Open the tablet's Settings app (the grey gear), tap Connections, then tap the word Wi-Fi. Pictures: Tablet basics: Wi-Fi.

  4. Tap the network starting with DitchAssist

Ditch Assist Lite: tap the Reach's hotspot instead (Connect to the Reach).

  5. Type the password 12345678 and tap Connect

The first time only. A network you joined before connects by itself.

  6. Tap Always connect

When Android says Internet may not be available, tap Always connect. A tablet with a SIM card must get this answer, or have mobile data off. Step by step: Join the module's Wi-Fi.

Part 2: Connect and check the machine (3 minutes)

Tap Pre-Flight Checks

Open the Ditch Assist app. Tap Pre-Flight Checks, the orange button at the bottom of the column down the right-hand side of the Home screen. A window opens.

  1. Connect. The green button.

Check for green ticks on Controller and GPS

The window now reads ONLINE. The Controller row names your control module. The GPS row must read RTK with a green tick: the most accurate GPS position. Anything else: wait. Every row explained.

Pre-Flight Checks rows: Controller, here Simulator; GPS RTK with a green tick; Satellites 22; DOP HDOP 0.80 1 2
  1. Controller. Your control module (the picture shows the simulator).
  2. GPS: RTK. Green tick: ready.

Full Automation Kit: hold Raise, then hold Lower

Under the GPS rows, press and hold the green Raise button: the implement must go up. Let go: it stops. Then hold the red Lower button: it must go down. Backwards? See Test raise and lower. Guidance Only and Ditch Assist Lite: skip this step.

Tap the X to close the window

Tap the X at the top right of the Pre-Flight Checks window. You stay connected.

Part 3: Set the field's benchmark (2 minutes)

Today you survey and grade a new ditch on one base setup, so you don't need to calibrate. But you'll be back, for example for next year's cleanout. That's when you need a benchmark: a spot you can drive back to, like the field gate, whose height the app remembers. Set it now, before you survey. Do I need to calibrate today?

Tap Ditching

On the Home screen, tap Ditching, the first big square. Because you're already connected, there's no Connect window: it asks What would you like to do? straight away.

Home screen with the Ditching square at the top left
  1. Ditching. First square, top left.

Tap New Survey

The first choice. The Survey screen opens.

  1. New Survey.

If a Set Blade Height window appears, tap Enter Manually

The first survey asks for the blade height if none is set: how high the cutting edge sits off the ground with the implement raised. Tap Enter Manually, the button on the left. No window? Blade height is already set: check it's right for this implement (Blade height) and skip the next two steps.

Set Blade Height window with Enter Manually, Auto Measure and Skip for Now 1
  1. Enter Manually. Left-hand button.

Type the blade height you measured

A box appears and number keys open along the bottom of the screen. Type the height in inches (typing on the tablet).
