Simple Maintenance: clean out a terrace

Survey the terrace channel once, design its grade, and let the app copy that design to the berm with the Berm Offset. Then grade the channel and top up the berm, switching targets on Hold. Also how to reuse a survey, implement a saved design and resume a job.

  • Full Automation Kit
  • Guidance Only Kit
  • Ditch Assist Lite

In the app Home › Terracing › Simple Maintenance

Simple Maintenance is for a terrace that's already there. You survey the channel once, design its finished grade, and the app makes the berm target an exact copy of that design raised by the Berm Offset (18″ by default). You decide where the berm needs dirt as you go.

No berm ground is surveyed, so there are no berm fill or soil-balance numbers in this method. If you need them, use Standard Terracing.

Before you start

  • You've opened Terracing, connected (or tapped Simulate) and tapped Simple Maintenance. Step by step: Open Terracing and pick the method.
  • The GPS button at the top of the screen shows a green RTK (RTK Fixed, the most accurate GPS position)
  • Blade height is set for this implement (Set blade height)
  • You know where the channel bottom runs, and which end is the outlet (where the water leaves)

Time: about 15 minutes on the tablet, plus the time to drive the channel and to grade it.

Survey the channel and design it

Tap New Survey

After you tap Simple Maintenance, a short menu opens with four wide buttons. New Survey is the first one, at the top. Tap it.

Simple Maintenance menu: four wide buttons stacked, New Survey (Survey the channel once, then design its grade), Load Survey, Load Design, Resume Job 1 2 3 4
  1. New Survey. Survey the channel now (this walk-through).
  2. Load Survey. Design from a channel survey you saved (below).
  3. Load Design. Grade a design you saved (below).
  4. Resume Job. Carry on where you stopped (below).

The Survey screen opens: the map, with a dark card in the middle called Survey the Channel. If blade height isn't set yet, a Set Blade Height window comes first (Set blade height).

Drive to the inlet end of the channel

Drive onto the channel bottom at its high end, where the water comes in (the inlet). Keep the implement raised: the app takes the blade height off every point it records.

The card checks you're ready to record. All three rows should be green: Connected, GPS: RTK and RTK: Stable. The line under them says Drive the channel bottom from inlet to outlet.

Dark card Survey the Channel: green ticks for Connected, GPS: RTK and RTK: Stable, the line Drive the channel bottom from inlet to outlet, a big green START SURVEY button and a small Skip guided flow link under it 1 2
  1. Ready checks. All three green before you start.
  2. START SURVEY. The next step.

Tap START SURVEY

START SURVEY is the big green button in the card in the middle of the map. Tap it. Don't use Skip guided flow under it: the guided way leads you straight on to the design.

Survey screen: a dark card in the middle of the map, Survey the Channel, with a big green START SURVEY button; the column of buttons down the right side reads Home, IQ Survey, Field Survey, Drive, Shots, Slope-IQ, Reset, Load
  1. START SURVEY. The big green button in the middle of the map.

The card closes. A red banner at the top of the screen reads Recording CHANNEL Survey, with the number of points so far.

Drive the channel bottom

Drive along the middle of the channel bottom at a steady pace, all the way to the far end (the outlet). The banner counts the points, and the chart along the bottom of the screen fills in with the ground you've driven.

Need to stop for a gate or a turn? Tap Pause in the column of buttons on the right. It turns into Resume; tap that to carry on. More: Survey a route.

Recording the channel: red banner Recording CHANNEL Survey (33 pts) at the top of the screen, an orange dotted track on the map, a red STOP button at the bottom middle of the map beside 33 pts, and a grey Pause button in the right-hand column
  1. Recording CHANNEL Survey (33 pts). Points recorded so far.
  2. Pause. Stops recording for a moment without ending the survey.

Tap STOP at the far end

At the outlet end, tap STOP. It's the red button at the bottom middle of the map, beside the point count.

The same recording screen, with the red STOP button at the bottom middle of the map beside 33 pts
  1. STOP. Bottom middle of the map, next to the point count.

A window called Save Survey? opens.

Type a name for the survey

The window shows the points, distance and grade you recorded. Tap the Survey Name box: the keyboard opens (typing on the tablet). Type a name you'll recognise next year, for example "SM Terrace 7 channel".

Save Survey? window: Points 39, Dist 420 ft, Grade 0.349%, a Survey Name box reading SM Terrace 7 channel, and Discard and Save buttons at the bottom 1
  1. Survey Name. Name it after the terrace.

Tap Save

Save is the wide green button at the bottom right of the window. If the keyboard covers it, hide the keyboard first (how).

Save Survey? window with the green Save button at the bottom right and Discard at the bottom left
  1. Save. Saves the survey. Discard, on the left, throws it away.

A window called Survey Direction opens.

Check which end is the outlet

The window shows the elevation at each end of your survey. The lower end is tagged OUTLET: that's where the app thinks the water leaves. Here the end of the survey is 1.5 ft lower, so it's tagged OUTLET.

Survey Direction: Survey start 811.9 ft tagged INLET, Survey end 810.4 ft tagged OUTLET, and the question Lower elevation suggests the outlet is at the END of your survey. Is this correct? 1
  1. Start and end. Elevation at each end, tagged INLET and OUTLET.

Tap Yes, that's correct

If that's right, tap Yes, that's correct, the green button at the bottom right. If the water really leaves by the other end, tap the orange-outlined button beside it instead: it reads No — outlet is at START (or No — outlet is at END). The design will drain toward the end you confirm.

The two answer buttons at the bottom of Survey Direction: No — outlet is at START (orange outline) and Yes, that's correct (green) 1 2
  1. Yes, that's correct. The guess is right.
  2. No — outlet is at START. The water leaves by the other end.

The design window, Terrace Design, opens.

Tap Design Channel

Terrace Design opens on its first step, Select Surveys. Your channel survey is already in the box, with its length and the outlet end you confirmed. Design Channel is the dark-green button under the box. Tap it.

Terrace Design, step Select Surveys: a wide box Channel Survey (Bottom) reading SM Terrace 7 channel (420ft, 39 pts · outlet end) with a green tick, and a dark-green Design Channel button under it
  1. Design Channel. The dark-green button under the survey box.

Simple Maintenance has three design steps, named across the top: Select Surveys, Channel Design, Implement.

Check the channel design

The Channel Design step draws your channel on a chart: the ground you surveyed (green dashed line), the design (thick orange line) and the dirt to cut (hatched). Under the chart is a row of four boxes. Two of them matter most:

  • MIN GRADE, the second box: the channel is never flatter than this. Terrace channels start at 0.10%.
  • BERM OFFSET, the fourth box (blue edge): how far the berm target sits above the finished channel. 18″ to start.

To change a value, tap − or + under it, or tap the number and type a new one.

Channel Design step: BestFit, Guided, Freeform buttons at the top left, BERM and Auto Flow at the top right, the channel chart, a row of four boxes DEPTH OFFSET 0.0, MIN GRADE 0.10%, CHANNEL BASE WIDTH 8 ft, BERM OFFSET 18 in, a CHANNEL DESIGN strip, and Back and Review & Implement at the bottom
  1. MIN GRADE. 0.10% to start; the channel is never flatter.
  2. BERM OFFSET. Berm target = finished channel + this. 18″ to start.

The other boxes: DEPTH OFFSET lowers the whole channel; CHANNEL BASE WIDTH is the channel bottom width (it starts at your Swath Width). BestFit, Guided and Freeform at the top left change how the line is drawn (Slope-IQ™ methods). Auto Flow at the top right flips the outlet if you need to; it then reads Reversed.

Tap Review & Implement

Review & Implement is the light-blue button in the bottom right corner. Tap it.

The Channel Design step with the light-blue Review & Implement button in the bottom right corner and Back in the bottom left
  1. Review & Implement. Bottom right corner.

A summary called Ready to Grade opens.

Tap Implement Slope

Check the summary: your channel survey, Berm Target Follows channel design, the length, the channel grade, the Berm Offset and the bottom width. Then tap Implement Slope, the big green button at the bottom.

Ready to Grade summary: Channel Survey SM Terrace 7 channel, Berm Target Follows channel design, Total Distance 420 ft, Channel Grade 0.491%, Berm Offset 18 in, Bottom Width 8 ft, a note Use the Channel/Berm toggle in the sidebar to switch targets during grading, then Back and a big green Implement Slope button 1 2
  1. Berm Target. Copies the channel design plus the offset.
  2. Implement Slope. The big green button at the bottom.

A small window asks you to name the design.

Tap Save & Implement

The window Save Terrace Design fills in a name for you: the survey name with "(Terrace)" on the end. Keep it, or tap the box and type your own. Then tap Save & Implement, the green button at the bottom right.

Save Terrace Design window: Name this design before implementing, a box reading SM Terrace 7 channel (Terrace), and Cancel and a green Save & Implement button 1 2
  1. Design name. The name you'll see in Load Design.
  2. Save & Implement. Saves the design and goes on to grading.

On a design you surveyed today, the Auto-Nudge Mode window opens next. If the app asks Calibrate GPS? instead (a saved design, or a resumed job), see Calibrate if it's another day.

Tap Enable Auto-Nudge

The Auto-Nudge Mode window offers to cut the channel in passes. Max Cut Per Pass, in the middle (2.0″ to start), is how much each pass takes off. Tap the round − or + beside it to change it. Under it, the app estimates how many passes the deepest spot needs.

Tap Enable Auto-Nudge, the dark-green button on the right. Or tap Use Manual Nudge on the left to take the channel straight to final grade; you then raise or lower the target yourself with Nudge Up and Nudge Down.

Auto-Nudge Mode window across the middle of the Grade screen: Max Cut Per Pass 2.0 inches with round minus and plus buttons, a line estimating 6 passes at the deepest point, and two wide buttons, Use Manual Nudge on the left and a dark-green Enable Auto-Nudge on the right
  1. Enable Auto-Nudge. Cuts the channel in passes.
  2. Use Manual Nudge. One target at final grade.
  3. Max Cut Per Pass. How much each pass takes off.

The Grade screen opens, stopped, with the channel as the target. More on passes: Nudge and Auto-Nudge.

Grade the channel

Lower the blade at the start of the channel

Drive to the start of the channel and put the blade down. Check the target is the channel: in the column of buttons on the right, the Channel button says ACTIVE under its name, and the green label on the chart along the bottom reads CHANNEL ACTIVE.

Terracing Grade screen, stopped: the map in the middle, a tall gauge with a black triangle and a yellow-and-black FINAL TARGET band, the profile chart along the bottom with a bright green channel line, a grey dashed berm line and a green CHANNEL ACTIVE label; the right-hand column reads Home, Start, Reset, Channel ACTIVE and Berm side by side, an AUTO-NUDGE box with Pass +, Pass 1 of 6 and Pass −, then Raise and Lower
  1. Channel ACTIVE. The blade follows the channel target. Berm is beside it.
  2. CHANNEL ACTIVE. The chart says the same.

The chart shows both targets: the channel bright green, the berm grey and dashed above it.

Tap Start

Start is the big green button near the top of the right-hand column, just under Home. Tap it.

The stopped Grade screen with the big green Start button near the top of the right-hand column
  1. Start. Top of the right-hand column, under Home.

A red banner at the top of the tall gauge reads Auto Grading Active. Start becomes a red Stop button, and a grey Hold button appears under it.

Grade the first pass

Drive the channel. On a Full Automation Kit the valve moves the blade to the target. The big label on the map tells you how the blade is doing: CUT, FILL or ON GRADE. Coverage paints along your track.

Grading the channel: red banner Auto Grading Active at the top of the gauge, a big ON GRADE label on the map, coverage painted along the track; the right-hand column now reads Stop, Hold, Channel ACTIVE, Berm, and the AUTO-NUDGE box
  1. Auto Grading Active. The valve is following the channel target.
  2. ON GRADE. Turns into CUT or FILL, with the inches, when the blade is off the target.

On a Guidance Only Kit or Ditch Assist Lite you move the blade yourself, by the chevrons and the gauge. How to read them: The Grade screen.

Tap Pass + at the end of each pass

When you finish a pass, tap Pass +: the blue button in the AUTO-NUDGE box on the right. The target drops by one Max Cut, and the counter under the button goes up (Pass 2 of 6). Pass −, under the counter, goes back one pass.

The grading screen with the AUTO-NUDGE box in the right-hand column: Max Cut 2.0 inches, a blue Pass + button, the counter Pass 1 of 6, and a pale Pass − button
  1. Pass +. Next pass, one Max Cut deeper.
  2. Pass 1 of 6. Where you are in the passes.

Keep going, pass by pass, until the last pass reaches final grade.

Switch to the berm

When the channel is done, or whenever you want to put dirt on the berm, switch the target. The same three steps switch back to the channel: Hold, then the target, then Resume.

Tap Hold

Hold is the grey button second from the top of the right-hand column, under Stop. Tap it.

The grading screen with the grey Hold button second from the top of the right-hand column, under the red Stop button
  1. Hold. Second from the top, under Stop.

The banner on the gauge turns orange and reads HOLD — Manual Control. The Hold button becomes an orange Resume button.

Tap Berm

While on Hold, tap Berm: the right half of the Channel / Berm button, with a small mountain picture.

On Hold: an orange banner HOLD — Manual Control at the top of the gauge, the orange Resume button in the right-hand column, and the Channel ACTIVE / Berm button under it
  1. Berm. Right half of the Channel / Berm button.
  2. HOLD — Manual Control. You can switch only while this shows.

The Berm button now says ACTIVE. The label on the chart reads BERM ACTIVE, the berm target on the chart turns bright blue, and the small badge in the top bar changes from CH to BERM.

Drive onto the berm and lower the blade

Drive onto the berm and put the blade down. The label on the map now shows how much fill the berm needs where you are, with blue up chevrons: 13.3″ FILL in this picture.

Berm selected on Hold: blue up chevrons and a big 13.3 inch FILL label on the map, a BERM badge in the top bar, the chart label BERM ACTIVE with the berm line in bright blue, Berm ACTIVE in the right-hand column and the AUTO-NUDGE counter at Pass 1 of 1
  1. 13.3″ FILL. The berm is 13.3″ below its target here.
  2. Pass 1 of 1. The berm has a single target: its finished height.

In Simple Maintenance the berm target is always the finished berm height: no berm ground was surveyed, so there's nothing to stage passes from. Build it up in as many machine passes as the dirt needs.

Tap Resume

Resume is the orange button second from the top of the right-hand column. Tap it.

The orange Resume button second from the top of the right-hand column, with Berm ACTIVE under it
  1. Resume. Carries on grading, now on the berm.
  2. Berm ACTIVE. The target you're about to grade to.

The banner reads Auto Grading Active again, and the blade follows the berm target.

To switch back, tap the chart (or use the buttons)

To go back to the channel, tap Hold first, as before. Then either tap Channel in the right-hand column, or tap near the channel line on the chart along the bottom. The button, the chart label and the badge all change together. Then tap Resume.

After tapping the channel line on the chart while on Hold: the chart label reads CHANNEL ACTIVE, the Channel button says ACTIVE, and the counter is back to Pass 1 of 6
  1. CHANNEL ACTIVE. The chart after a tap near the channel line.
  2. Channel ACTIVE. The button follows the chart.

Tap Stop when you finish

Stop is the red button at the top of the right-hand column. Tap it when you're done for now. The job saves by itself, and you can pick it up later from Resume Job.

Grading the berm: Auto Grading Active, BERM badge, ON GRADE, and the red Stop button at the top of the right-hand column
  1. Stop. Stops grading and saves the job.

Channel and berm work are recorded separately, so berm passes never paint over the channel's coverage.

Design from a saved survey

Use this when you surveyed the channel earlier (last year, or before lunch) and want to design and grade it now.

Tap Load Survey

In the Simple Maintenance menu, Load Survey is the second wide button. Tap it.

  1. Resume Job. Continue a previously saved job.

A window called Resume Job lists your terracing jobs by date.

Tap Resume beside your job

Each job shows its name (the design name, ending in "(Terrace)"), when it was saved, and how much ground it covers. Tap the orange Resume button on the right of the job you want. The bin icon beside it deletes a job.

Resume Job window: saved terracing jobs grouped by date; the first, SM Terrace 7 channel (Terrace) (Terrace), Saved Fri, Oct 16 8:57 PM, 249 cells, with an orange Resume button and a bin icon on its right
  1. Resume. Loads the design and your progress.
  2. The job. Design name, then when it was saved.

The app then asks Calibrate GPS?.

Calibrate if it's another day

The Calibrate GPS? window asks if your base station has moved since the design was made.

  • Same day, same base setup: tap Skip, in the bottom right corner beside Calibrate.
  • Another day, or the base was moved or restarted: drive to the field's benchmark, lower the blade onto it, and tap the orange Calibrate button. Then follow Benchmarks and calibration.
Calibrate GPS? window: If your RTK base station location has changed since this design file was created, you should calibrate to ensure accurate grading. Drive to a point where the design elevation matches the original ground (a zero-cut/fill location), lower your implement, then calibrate. Buttons Skip and Calibrate 2
  1. Skip. Same day, same base setup.
  2. Calibrate. Another day or the base moved: calibrate on the benchmark.

The window's own tip talks about a zero-cut/fill spot. On a terrace, use the field's benchmark, or an untouched spot on the original survey. Never calibrate on ground you've already cut.

Drive back to the terrace

If you're more than about 100 ft (30 m) from the surveyed line, an orange banner at the top of the map says how far: … from survey line — accuracy may decrease. Drive back to the terrace before you tap Start; the banner goes away once you're closer.

Resumed job on the Grade screen with an orange banner across the top of the map: 1883.2 ft from survey line — accuracy may decrease
  1. Off-line banner. How far you are from the surveyed line.

Then grade as above, from Lower the blade at the start of the channel.

Tapping the Terracing card while a job is loaded asks Start New Session?. Tapping Start New clears the loaded survey, design and progress from the screen; nothing saved is deleted.
