Send your app logs to Ditch Assist support

The app keeps a log of every session. Sending it lets a product specialist see exactly what happened: the GPS fix, the connection, every hold and error. Takes a minute on any internet connection.

In the app Settings › LOGS › Log Files › Send

Send logs before you call, and as soon as you can after the problem, from any internet connection. With the logs, a product specialist can see what the GPS, the connection and the app were doing at the moment it went wrong, instead of guessing over the phone. Logs are on every kit, including Ditch Assist Lite.

Before you start

  • The tablet is on internet (not the module or Reach Wi-Fi).
  • Automatic grading is stopped (opening Settings from the Grade screen asks to stop it).
  • You know the rough time the problem happened.

Time: about 1 minute.

Send the logs

  1. Tap Settings

Tap Settings, the fourth button down the right-hand column of Home. The Settings screen opens.

  2. Scroll down to the LOGS box

Slide your finger up the screen to scroll down (how to scroll) until you reach the LOGS box, just above ABOUT, near the bottom. The Log Files row shows how many files there are and their size, with three buttons: Send, Share and Clear All.

Settings LOGS section: Log Level set to Info, and the Log Files row reading 3 files (39.4 KB) with Send, Share and Clear All buttons, then a privacy note with a Privacy Policy link 1 2 3 4
    1. Log Level. Leave on Info unless support asks.
    2. Send. Uploads the logs straight to Ditch Assist support.
    3. Share. One text file to email or another app.
    4. Clear All. Deletes every log file. Don't, while a problem is open.
  3. Tap Send

Tap Send (box 2 above). The Send Logs window opens.

  4. Type your name

Tap the Operator Name box (box 1 below) and type your name (typing). Support uses it to match the logs to your call. The app remembers it for next time. Leaving it blank shows Enter your name.

Send Logs window: 3 files (42.5 KB), an Operator Name box reading Demo Operator, a paragraph listing what is uploaded, a Privacy Policy link, the ticked box I understand what will be sent, and Cancel and Send buttons 1 2 3
    1. Operator Name. Your name.
    2. I understand what will be sent. Tick it the first time.
    3. Send. Greyed out until the box is ticked.
  5. Tick the box the first time

Read what the upload contains (see below). The first time, tap I understand what will be sent to tick it (box 2); Send stays greyed out until you do. You won't be asked again unless someone taps Reset on Reset Startup Warnings, in the ABOUT box of Settings.

  6. Tap Send and wait for Sent!

Tap Send at the bottom right of the window (box 3). You'll see Packaging logs..., then Uploading..., then a green Sent! and the window closes by itself.

  7. Call, or email, and say you sent them

Call 1-833-DITCH-AS or email support@ditchassist.com (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central). Give the operator name you typed, the time it happened and what you saw. What else to have ready.

If it doesn't say Sent!

No internet, nothing sent“No internet — the logs were NOT sent. Retry when the tablet has an internet connection.”

The upload failed and you closed the share screen

Nothing left the tablet.

Fix:

  1. Join farm Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot (how).
  2. Go back to Ditch Assist and tap Retry. You should see a green Sent!
Upload failed, file handed to another app“No internet — the logs could NOT be uploaded to Ditch Assist. The file was handed to another app instead; it is only delivered if you finish sending it there. When the tablet has internet, tap Retry to upload directly.”

The app offered the Android share screen instead

Support only gets the file if you finished sending it in that app, for example an email to support@ditchassist.com that actually went out.

Fix:

  1. When you're back on internet (Wi-Fi), tap Retry if the Send Logs window is still open. If you closed it, tap Send in the LOGS box again.
  2. You should see a green Sent!
Another error“Failed — try again”

The upload didn't go through

Fix:

  1. Tap Retry.
  2. Keeps failing? Use Share to email the logs instead.
  3. Call support and say how you sent them.

Share: send the logs by email or another app

Share puts all the log files into one text file and opens the Android share screen. Use it when support asks for it, or when Send keeps failing. It sends nothing until you finish sending in the other app.

  1. In the LOGS box of Settings, tap Share (box 3 in the first picture). You should see Sharing 1 file, ditchassist_logs.txt.
  2. Tap your email app. If you don't see it, slide the list of apps up to see more.
  3. Type support@ditchassist.com in the To box. The subject is filled in as "DitchAssist Logs".
  4. Tap the send arrow. Check it left your outbox.

Working with no internet in the field

  • Logs keep recording on the tablet in Documents/DitchAssist/logs/, one file per day.
  • The app keeps the 5 most recent files (10 MB in all) and deletes older ones, so send within a few days of the problem.
  • Don't tap Clear All while a problem is open. It asks Clear Logs? then deletes every log file; support can't look back after that.

Log Level

Log Level, in the LOGS box of Settings (box 1 in the first picture), sets how much is recorded. Leave it on Info (the default) unless support asks for more. To change it, tap the box and tap a level in the list.

LevelRecords
DebugAll activity including GPS detail. Files grow fast.
InfoConnections, survey events, grading. Default.
WarningRTK loss, stale GPS, errors.
ErrorFailures only.

What the logs contain

The upload holds the app's own log files and the operator name you typed, nothing else from the tablet. The logs record:

  • The tablet's make, model, Android version and build, and the app version, at the start of each session.
  • What happened and when: connections and drops, surveys, grading starts and stops, holds, settings sent to the controller, warnings and errors, and crashes.
  • A snapshot about once a minute and at key moments: GPS fix type, satellites, position and elevation, workflow, cut/fill error, nudge, pass, benchmark offset, units, the RTK Filter setting, and the tablet's Wi-Fi signal, link speed and network name.
  • Survey, job and field names you typed.

Uploads are stored privately on servers in the United States, can be opened only by Ditch Assist support staff, and are used only to troubleshoot your problem. The full wording is in the app: tap View next to Privacy Policy, in the ABOUT box of Settings.
