Survey a run you can't drive

When part of the route is under water, blocked or off-limits: pause the survey to drive round an obstacle, take single shots where you can reach the line, and use Grade Check to read the fall between two spots without recording anything.

Not every route can be driven end to end. Part of an old ditch may be full of water, a culvert or a fence may be in the way, or a stretch may be too soft. Two tools on the Survey screen let you finish the survey anyway. A third reads the grade between two spots without recording anything.

Before you start

  • You're on the Survey screen of your workflow, recording a survey or ready to (Survey a route)
  • The GPS button at the top of the screen shows a green RTK: RTK Fixed, the most accurate GPS position. Shots and Grade Check don't work without it.

Time: a few seconds for each obstacle, shot or grade check.

Pause round an obstacle

Pause works while you're recording, with Drive selected (the normal way of recording, a point every 10 ft).

  1. Tap Pause before the obstacle

Survey up to the obstacle. Then tap Pause: the grey button in the column of buttons down the right side of the screen, under Drive and Shots.

Recording a survey: red label Recording Survey (15 pts) at the top of the map and a grey Pause button in the right-hand column, under Drive and Shots
    1. Pause. Grey, in the right-hand column under Drive and Shots.

You should see the label at the top of the map turn orange: Survey PAUSED. Pause turns into an orange Resume button.

  2. Drive round and line up on the route again

Take whatever path you need. The detour isn't recorded and the point count stays where it was. A thin line on the map shows where you've been.

Survey paused: orange label Survey PAUSED (10 pts) at the top, a thin green line on the map ahead of the last orange point, and an orange Resume button in the right-hand column
    1. Survey PAUSED (10 pts). Nothing is logged while paused.
    2. Thin line. Where you've driven since you paused. Not recorded.
  3. Tap Resume

Back on the line past the obstacle, tap the orange Resume button, where Pause was. The next point is logged straight away, where you are.

The same paused screen, with the orange Resume button in the right-hand column under Drive and Shots
    1. Resume. Orange, where Pause was.

You should see the gap joined by a straight line, drawn dashed on the map and on the ground chart along the bottom. Its length is the straight distance across, not your detour.

Recording again after Resume: on the ground chart, a dashed straight stretch between about 100 and 305 feet where the survey was paused; Pause is back in the right-hand column
    1. Dashed stretch. Bridged, not surveyed. Check it looks like the ground you skipped.

Take shots where you can reach the line

Use Shots when you can only get to the route at certain spots, for example dry crossings along a flooded ditch. In Shots, the app records one point each time you tap, instead of one every 10 ft. You can switch between Drive and Shots at any time, even mid-survey.

  1. Tap Shots

Shots is the white button with a target picture, right of Drive, in the column on the right. Tap it.

Recording screen: in the right-hand column, Drive (orange, selected) and Shots (white) side by side under Field Survey
    1. Shots. Right of Drive, under Field Survey.

You should see the label at the top change to Shot Survey. Points stop logging by distance. An orange Log Point button and a white Grade Check button take the place of Pause.

Shots selected: red label Shot Survey (26 pts) at the top of the map; in the right-hand column Shots is orange, with a big orange Log Point button and a white Grade Check button under it
    1. Shot Survey (26 pts). You're taking shots.
    2. Log Point and Grade Check. Where Pause was.
  2. Stop on the spot and tap Log Point

Drive onto the route and stop. Hold still with the implement at the same raised height you survey at. Then tap Log Point, the big orange button.

The big orange Log Point button in the right-hand column, under Drive and Shots
    1. Log Point. Records the spot you're stopped on.

You should see a green message along the bottom of the screen: Point 27 logged (the number is the point count).

A green bar along the bottom of the screen reads Point 27 logged; the label at the top reads Shot Survey (27 pts)
    1. Point 27 logged. The shot is in the survey.

Log Point greys out while there's no RTK Fixed. If the fix drops or the GPS goes stale as you tap, the shot is refused with No usable GPS fix — point not logged. Wait for the fix and tap again.

  3. Repeat at each spot you can reach

Drive to the next spot, stop, and tap Log Point again. Shots show as large orange dots on the map, joined by a dashed line. On the ground chart, straight dashed lines join them.

Shot Survey (29 pts): two large orange shot dots on the map joined by a dashed line; on the ground chart, shot points joined by straight dashed lines at the right-hand end
    1. Shots on the map. Large orange dots, dashed between them.
    2. Shots on the chart. Straight dashed lines between the shots.
  4. Tap Drive when you can drive the line again

As soon as the route opens up, tap Drive, left of Shots. The app goes back to a point every 10 ft, and Pause comes back.

In the right-hand column, a white Drive button left of the orange Shots button
    1. Drive. Back to automatic points.

Where to put shots

  • At both ends of the stretch you can't drive, so the bridge starts and ends on measured ground.
  • On every rise and every low spot you can get to. A straight line between shots hides anything in between.
  • Closer together where the ground changes, further apart on an even slope.
  • Back to Drive as soon as you can drive the line again.

Read the grade between two spots

Grade Check works like a rod-and-level check: shoot one spot, move, and read the grade, distance and fall. Nothing is saved to the survey. The button shows only with Shots selected, but you don't have to be recording.

Use it to check the fall of an existing ditch before you decide whether it needs work, or to check a finished pass.

Tap Grade Check

With Shots selected, Grade Check is the white button with a ruler picture in the column on the right, under Log Point. Tap it.

Survey screen with Shots selected: a white Grade Check button with a ruler picture in the right-hand column, under the orange Log Point button
  1. Grade Check. Under Log Point. Greyed out without RTK Fixed.

A window called Grade Check opens.

Stop on the first spot and tap Shoot A

Stop on point A and hold still. Tap Shoot A, the blue button at the top left of the window. Its elevation shows under the label.

Grade Check window: Shoot Point A, then move along the run — the grade updates live. Shoot Point B to pin the result. A blue Shoot A button, a greyed-out Shoot B, Point A dash, a greyed-out New Check and a Close button 1
  1. Shoot A. Takes the first spot. Shoot B lights up after it.

Move along the run and watch the grade

Drive along the run toward point B. The grade updates as you move, marked LIVE, with Downhill, Uphill or level. Under it: Dist, the straight-line distance from A, and Δ, the difference in elevation in inches.

Grade Check while moving: Shoot A shows 807.37 ft, Shoot B is now orange, the grade reads 0.16% Downhill with a LIVE badge, Dist 298.4 ft and Δ 5.8 in 1
  1. Grade, LIVE. From A to where you are now.

Stop on the second spot and tap Shoot B

Stop on point B and hold still. Tap Shoot B, the orange button at the top right of the window.

The same Grade Check window, with the orange Shoot B button at the top right 1
  1. Shoot B. Top right. Pins the result.

Read the result

You should see PINNED beside the grade. A green grade marked Downhill means the ground falls from A to B, the way the water should run. Red and Uphill means it rises.

Grade Check after Shoot B: Shoot A 807.37 ft, Shoot B 806.25 ft, grade 0.11% Downhill with a PINNED badge, Dist 994.5 ft and Δ 13.5 in, New Check and Close buttons 1 2
  1. Grade, PINNED. The result from A to B.
  2. Dist and Δ. Distance and fall between the two spots.

Tap Close, or New Check

Close, bottom right, closes the window. Nothing is recorded. New Check, bottom left, clears A and B so you can check another stretch.

The bottom of the Grade Check window: New Check on the left and Close on the right 1 2
  1. Close. Back to the Survey screen.
  2. New Check. Start again from a new point A.

If it doesn't work

  • No Pause button: Shots is selected, or you're not recording. Pause is for Drive while recording.
  • No usable GPS fix — point not logged: wait for RTK Fixed. More.
  • The design cuts a hump you didn't know about in a bridged stretch: the straight line missed it. Add shots there, or check the stretch with Grade Check.
  • Grade Check or Log Point is greyed out: not connected, or no RTK Fixed yet. Connect and wait for the fix, or tap Simulate to practise.
