Tiling: survey, design and install a tile line
Standard Tiling from start to finish: pick the method, set blade height, survey the tile route, confirm the water flow, design the tile line inside your depth window, and install it uphill from the outlet.
- Full Automation Kit
- Guidance Only Kit
- Ditch Assist Lite
In the app Home › Tiling › Standard Tiling › New Survey
Standard Tiling lays one tile line along a route you drive. You survey the route first. The app then designs the tile line: it stays between your minimum and maximum depth and never falls flatter than your minimum grade. Then you install it in one pass, from the outlet uphill.
With the Full Automation Kit the plow holds depth by itself. With the Guidance Only Kit and Ditch Assist® Lite you hold it to the guide. To follow the lay of the land instead of a straight line, use Contour Tiling.
Before you start
Time: about 15 minutes to survey and design a quarter-mile line, plus the install.
- The tablet is charged and on the control module's Wi-Fi (password 12345678), or on the receiver's own Wi-Fi with Ditch Assist Lite. See Connect.
- Your RTK base is set up and running. Tile grade relies on RTK alone: there's no plow pitch sensor.
- Blade height set for the plow (Set blade height). The app asks the first time.
- Your job's numbers: target depth, minimum and maximum depth, minimum grade.
- You know where the outlet is.
Start Tiling and connect
Tap Tiling
On the Home screen, tap the Tiling card. It's the first card in the bottom row, with a picture of a tile plow.
Not on the Home screen? Tap Home first, the black button at the top of the column down the right side.
- Tiling. Bottom row, on the left.
Tap Connect
A window called Tiling — Connect opens. Tap the big green Connect button at the top. The app looks for the control module on its Wi-Fi.
To practise with no machine, tap Simulate, the second button. With Ditch Assist Lite the top button reads Emlid Reach. Trouble connecting: Connect.
1
2- Connect. Finds the control module.
- Simulate. Practice mode. No machine needed.
Tap Continue
The window changes to System Check. Wait until all three rows show a green tick. The last row must read RTK Fixed, the most accurate GPS position. If it's amber and reads FLOAT, wait.
Then tap the green Continue button at the bottom.
1
2- GPS Accuracy. Must read RTK Fixed.
- Continue. On to the Tiling choices.
Tap Standard Tiling
The window asks for the Tiling Method. Tap Standard Tiling, the first choice. It designs the tile from a route you drive.
Contour Tiling, below it, guides you along a contour of the field first (Contour Tiling).
1
2- Standard Tiling. This page.
- Contour Tiling. Follows the lay of the land.
Tap New Survey
The window asks What would you like to do?. Tap New Survey, the first choice, to drive the tile route now.
- Load Survey: design from a route you drove before.
- Load Design: install a tile design you saved before (Install the tile).
- Survey Whole Field: field elevations to export, not a tile route (Survey a whole field).
1
2
3- New Survey. Drive the tile route now.
- Load Survey. Design from a saved route.
- Load Design. Install a saved design.
Set blade height, if the app asks
The first time, a window called Set Blade Height opens. Blade height is how high the plow's cutting edge sits off the ground with the plow raised in transport. The app takes it off every survey point.
Tap Auto Measure (bottom right) and follow Set blade height: the app reads the GPS with the plow up, then down. Skip for Now leaves it unset, and every survey elevation is then off by that height.
1
2- Auto Measure. Plow up, then down, and the app works it out.
- Enter Manually. Type a height you measured.
Survey the tile route
Drive to one end of the tile line
The survey screen opens with a dark card in the middle: Ready to Survey, with the reminder Drive to the start of your drain route
. Drive to either end of the tile line. The outlet end is a good habit, because that's where you'll install from. After the survey, the app asks you which way the water flows.
- Ready to Survey. Drive to the start of the line while this card shows.
Tap START SURVEY
Check the three lines on the card are green: Connected
, GPS: RTK
, RTK: Stable
. Then tap the green START SURVEY button on the card. Recording starts straight away.
- START SURVEY. Starts recording.
- Connected, GPS: RTK, RTK: Stable. All three should be green.
Drive the tile centreline
Drive exactly where the tile will go, at a steady pace, on RTK Fixed. A red banner at the top reads Recording Survey
with the number of points so far. The route on the map and the profile along the bottom fill in as you go.
Pace, recording interval and other survey tips: Survey a route.
- Recording Survey. Points recorded so far.
Tap STOP at the far end
At the far end of the tile line, tap the red STOP button. It's in the dark pill near the bottom of the map, next to the point count. A window called Save Survey? opens.
- STOP. Ends the survey.
Type a name for the survey
The top of the window shows what you drove: Points, Dist and the overall Grade. The name starts as the date and time with (Tiling).
Tap the Survey Name box and type a name you'll recognise, for example North 80 main 3
. The keyboard opens at the bottom of the screen (typing and hiding the keyboard).
1
2- Survey Name. Tap it and type the field and line.
- Points, Dist, Grade. What you just drove.
Tap Save
Tap the green Save button in the bottom right corner of the window. The survey is saved and the design steps start.
1- Save. Saves the survey and goes on to the design.
Design the tile line
Tap Yes, Correct or No, Reverse It
A window called Water Flow Direction asks you to confirm: Confirm: water flows from the START of your survey toward the END.
START is where you began driving.
- You started at the top end and drove down to the outlet: tap the blue Yes, Correct.
- You started at the outlet and drove uphill: tap No, Reverse It, on the right.
1
2- Yes, Correct. The outlet is at the END of your survey.
- No, Reverse It. The outlet is where you started.
Slide Target Depth
A small window called Tile Parameters opens. Put your finger on the round handle under Target Depth and slide it until the number shows the depth you'd like the tile (it starts at 36″).
The app remembers your last values for the next job, so check them every time.
1- Target Depth. Where you'd like the tile, below the ground.
Slide Min Grade %
Slide the handle under Min Grade % to the flattest grade the tile may run (it starts at 0.10 %). The line will never fall flatter than this toward the outlet.
1- Min Grade %. The flattest the line may run.
Tap Create Design
Tap the blue Create Design button at the bottom of the window. The Tile Design screen opens with a best-fit tile line already drawn.
1- Create Design. Opens Tile Design.
Check the design
The chart shows the ground, the tile line and the depth window: Min Depth and Max Depth, 24″ and 72″ to start with. Four cards under the chart hold your numbers. Tap a card's number, or its minus and plus, to change it.
- A red strip under the cards means part of the line breaks a limit (the warnings).
- The blue tag on the right, Required Start Depth, is how deep the plow has to be at the outlet when you start.
Everything on this screen, including Guided and Freeform, Reverse and a fixed outlet depth: Tile Design in detail.
- Required Start Depth. Plow depth at the outlet: 54″ here.
- A card. Target Depth, with minus and plus. Min Grade, Min Depth and Max Depth sit to its right.
Tap Apply Design
Tap the blue Apply Design button in the bottom right corner. A small window called Save Design opens.
- Apply Design. Bottom right corner.
Type a name for the design
The window says Name this design before implementing:
. The name starts as Tiling with the date and time. Tap the box and type the field and line, so you can find it under Load Design later.
1- Design name. Shown later under Load Design.
Tap Save
Tap the green Save button. The design is saved and the Grade screen opens, ready to install.
A design opened later from Load Survey or Load Design asks Calibrate GPS?
at this point (once per design each app session): see the benchmark box at the top.
1- Save. Saves the design and opens the Grade screen.
The depth window runs between Min Depth (24″ by default) and Max Depth (72″) below the ground. The tile line stays inside it all the way to the outlet.
- Tile line. Stays inside the depth window and never runs flatter than Min Grade (0.10 % by default).
- Required Start Depth. How deep the plow has to be at the outlet when you start.
- Install direction. Start at the outlet, the low end, and work uphill.
- Outlet transition. With Fix outlet depth on, the line starts at the depth you set and may leave the window this far from the outlet. Min Grade still applies.
Install the tile
The Grade screen shows the route on the map, the tile line on the profile along the bottom, and the depth guide in the tall panel on the right. Tiling has no Auto-Nudge: tile goes in in one pass. Every detail of the install, including each Start message: Install the tile from the outlet.
Drive to the outlet
Take the plow to the outlet: the low end of the line, where the water leaves. Tile goes in from the outlet uphill. On the map, the orange line is the tile route and the pink arrow is your machine.
- Route and machine. Orange tile route; the pink arrow is you.
Lower the plow to depth
Put the plow in and lower it until the box at the bottom of the depth guide reads ON GRADE. Before that it shows how much deeper to go, for example +54 and CUT: the plow is still 54″ above the tile line.
Start stays grey until the plow is within about 1″ of the design depth. A note under it says how far to lower: Lower N″ to start
.
- Depth readout. +54″ CUT: lower the plow until it reads ON GRADE.
Tap Start
Tap the green Start button, second from the top of the right-hand column.
If a window says Start at the Outlet
, you're at the wrong end: tap Cancel and drive to the outlet (Start at the Outlet).
- Start. Green once the plow is at depth. (The simulator skips the depth check, so here it's green already.)
Tap I Understand — Continue
The first Start of each app session shows a window called Tiling Mode — Operator Notice. It says the app has no plow pitch sensor: grade relies on RTK GPS alone. Read it, then tap the orange I Understand — Continue button in the bottom right corner.
Ditch Assist Lite skips this window: nothing moves the plow but you.
- I Understand — Continue. Once per session. Cancel doesn't start.
Pull the line uphill
You should see a red Auto Grading Active banner at the top of the depth guide. Drive uphill at your normal plowing speed. The route turns green behind you as tile goes in, and the depth readout should stay on ON GRADE.
With the Guidance Only Kit or Ditch Assist Lite, hold the plow to the guide yourself.
- Auto Grading Active. The plow is under depth control.
- Depth readout. ON GRADE.
Tap Hold before a crossing
Before a road crossing, a service line, or anywhere you lift the plow on purpose, tap Hold. It's the grey button under the red Stop. The app stops sending depth commands; you run the plow by hand.
Ditch Assist Lite has no Hold button: tap Stop instead.
- Hold. Grey, under Stop.
Tap Resume after the crossing
On Hold, the banner reads HOLD — Manual Control
and the button turns orange: Resume. Put the plow back in to depth and tap Resume.
- Resume. Orange. Back to automatic depth.
- Nudge. Should be 0″ before you resume. Here it reads +2.0″.
Tap Stop at the top end
At the inlet, the top end of the line, tap the red Stop button at the top of the column. The job saves itself, with any nudge and rock-hit lift. To pick it up later, open the Grade screen with nothing loaded and tap its orange Resume button (Resume a job). Tiling has no Resume Job in its start window.
If the plow rides up on a rock and the line lifts by itself: Rock Hit Detection.
- Stop. Ends the run and saves the job.
If something goes wrong
- Start stays grey: Start stays greyed out.
Start at the Outlet
: Start asks you to go to the outlet.- A red ribbon in Tile Design: Tile designer warnings.
- Too deep or too shallow at the outlet: Wrong depth at the outlet.
Rock Hit — Design Adjusted
: The line went shallower by itself.- Depth swings in soft ground: Depth swings.
- The outlet is at the wrong end: Wrong outlet.
