Install or update the Ditch Assist app
Download the app from the Ditch Assist website straight onto the tablet, allow the install, and update it later by installing over the top. Which build for older 32-bit tablets, when you must uninstall first, and how to check your version.
Where ditchassist.com › App download page
The Ditch Assist® app isn't in the Google Play Store. You download it from the Ditch Assist website directly onto the tablet, and Android asks you once to allow installs from that source. If your tablet came with a kit, the app may already be on it: check the version (below) and skip to Set up the tablet.
Before you start
- The tablet on shop or home Wi-Fi with internet (not the control module Wi-Fi)
- Android 7.0 or newer. Android 6 and older can't install any build.
- The tablet charged, and about 10 minutes for Android's questions
- New to installing apps outside the Play Store? Tablet basics: install an app file shows each Android screen.
Install it
Open the download page on the tablet
Open the tablet's web browser (Chrome or Samsung Internet) and type ditchassist.com/app.html in the address bar at the top. Or open that page on a computer and scan the QR code beside the download with the tablet's camera: it downloads the file straight to the tablet.
Tap Download v1.5.4
On the first card, marked PRODUCTION, tap the black Download v1.5.4 button at the top right. That's the standard build, right for almost every tablet, including the Galaxy Tab A11+. The file downloads.
- Download v1.5.4. The standard build. Tap this one.
- Download v1.5.4 for older tablets. Only if the standard build won't install.
Open the downloaded file
Tap the download message at the bottom of the browser, or find the file in the My Files app under Downloads.
The first time: tap Settings in Android's message
Android stops and shows a message: your browser (or My Files) isn't allowed to install unknown apps. Tap Settings in that message. A settings page opens with one switch.
Turn on Allow from this source
Tap the Allow from this source switch so it turns blue.
Tap Back
Tap the tablet's Back button (an arrow pointing left, at the right end of the bar along the bottom: Back button). You're back on the install screen.
Android may also warn that files from the internet can be harmful. Carry on only when the file came from the Ditch Assist website or from Ditch Assist support.
Tap Install
Tap Install, at the bottom right of Android's install window. Wait a few seconds until it says the app is installed.
Tap Open
Tap Open, in the same place. The first launch asks for file access and shows the safety screens: First launch walks you through them.
Update to a new version
When a new version is posted on the download page, download it and install it over the top of the one you have. Don't uninstall first.
- From v1.2 or later (including v1.4 and every v1.5 build): install over the top. Your settings, calibration, blade height and saved work all stay.
- From Alpha 2.x, v1.0 or v1.1: these were signed differently, so the new app can't install over them. Uninstall the old app first (see below), then install.
The version list on the download page also keeps earlier releases, so you can roll back if a new one gives you trouble on your setup. If something breaks after an update, send logs to support before you change versions.
Uninstalling: what you keep and what you lose
| Kept | Lost |
|---|---|
Surveys, designs, grading jobs, saved benchmarks, LiDAR fields and logs in Documents/DitchAssist/ on the tablet | Everything in Settings, including units, blade height, controller tuning and the current calibration offset. Write your settings down first. |
Check which version you have
The version and build date are in small grey writing at the bottom of the Home screen. They're also in Settings: scroll to the ABOUT box near the bottom, row Version. Support will ask for it.
1- Home. Version, then build date and time.
1- Settings, ABOUT, Version. Same number.
Is it the latest? Compare with the Production card on the download page.
If something goes wrong
- Android won't let you install the file: Allow installs from unknown sources
App not installed
: wrong build, old signed version or not enough space- An update won't install over the old app: Updating from an older version
- The app keeps asking for file access, or your saved work is missing after a reinstall: File access and Files missing
- A feature from the manual isn't there: check the version and the Mode
