Contour Tiling: lay tile along the lay of the land

Get a field surface, let the app draw the contours, drive your tile route along the one it highlights, then design and install the tile from the route you drove. Every surface source and the guided path to use.

In the app Home › Tiling › Contour Tiling › Generate New Contours & Survey

Contour Tiling lays a tile line that follows the shape of the field instead of a straight line across it. The app draws the field's contours from an elevation map. You drive your tile route along the contour it highlights. The tile is then designed from the route you actually drove.

A contour is level, so following one keeps the tile at a steady depth as the ground rolls. Ease off it downhill toward the outlet where you need fall. The design, the depth window and the install work as in Standard Tiling. This page covers what's different: the field surface, the contours and the guided survey.

Before you start

Time: about 10 minutes to draw the contours and survey one line, once the field's elevation map is ready. Preparing a LiDAR map at home takes a few minutes more (Prepare a field).

  • Connected to a control module, an activated Reach (Ditch Assist® Lite) or the simulator. Contours can't be drawn or followed on a DIG™ module or a Bluetooth GPS.
  • An elevation map of the field, ideally a saved LiDAR DEM prepared on internet Wi-Fi before you go out. The control module's Wi-Fi has no internet.
  • Blade height set, and a green RTK in the top bar.

Start Contour Tiling

Tap Tiling

On the Home screen, tap the Tiling card, first in the bottom row, with a picture of a tile plow.

Ditch Assist Home screen; the Tiling card is the first card in the bottom row

  1. Generate New Contours & Survey. Get a surface, draw contours, survey along one.
  2. Load Existing Survey. Design from a saved contour route.
  3. Load Existing Design. Install a saved contour-tile design.

Get a field surface

The window now says First get a field surface to draw contours from. Contours come from an elevation map of the whole field, not from one line. You only need it once per field. After that you can survey as many tile lines along its contours as you like.

The usual choice is a LiDAR map of the field you saved earlier (Prepare a field). Other sources are in the table below.

Tap Saved LiDAR DEM

Tap Saved LiDAR DEM, the blue button on the right in the second row. A list of your saved fields opens.

Field surface window: First get a field surface to draw contours from. A green Survey New Field button; under Or use existing data, Saved Survey (orange), Saved LiDAR DEM (blue), Point File (yellow), GeoTIFF DEM (blue); Open LiDAR & Mapping; and the line Generating contours needs a controller or the simulator 1 2

  1. A saved field. Tap its name.

Other ways to get a field surface

ButtonWhat happens
Saved SurveyA whole-field survey you drove before. Load Saved Survey lists them; tap Use for Contours on yours. None saved: No saved surveys found. Survey a field first. Needs at least 10 points.
Point FileGround points from another source. Pick a .txt, .csv, .xyz or .tsv file in the file picker, then match its columns in Import Point File. Choose Meters or Feet: it starts on the app's units, and most point files are in metres. Step by step: Import a design: point files.
GeoTIFF DEMAn elevation .tif of the field, up to 64 MB and 4,000,000 cells. Contour Settings then also asks for the file's units (picture below). Errors: Import a design: GeoTIFF.
Survey New FieldDrive the field to build a surface (below).
Open LiDAR & MappingSwitches to LiDAR & Mapping to draw a boundary and fetch LiDAR over the internet. Needs the one-time LiDAR unlock. Save the DEM, reconnect to the control module, and come back to Saved LiDAR DEM.

Picking a point file or GeoTIFF uses Android's file picker: Pick the file on the tablet.

Contour Settings for a GeoTIFF: DEM 430x423 cells, Elev range 46.93 ft; Contour Interval chips; Custom inches; Source units: Meters (chosen, orange) and Feet; Smoothing Medium; Estimated contours ~188 lines; Cancel and Generate 1
  1. Source units. GeoTIFF only. Pick what the file is really in. Most are in metres; the app starts on Feet when it's set to feet.

Survey New Field

No LiDAR or file for the field? Drive it. Go back and forth across the field, passes about a swath apart, so the app has elevations across the whole area. The more even the coverage, the cleaner the contours.

Tap Survey New Field

In the field surface window, tap the green Survey New Field button at the top. The whole-field survey screen opens. The banner at the top reads Armed — tap Start in sidebar to record.

The field surface window; the green Survey New Field button is at the top 1
  1. Survey New Field. Drive the field to build a surface.

Tap Start Fresh Survey, if the app asks

If you have field surveys saved already, a window asks first: Resume or export existing survey. Tap the green Start Fresh Survey button, bottom right, for a new field. To add points to an old survey instead, tap its row.

Resume or export existing survey window: Show only contour surveys ticked, one saved survey row, and buttons Cancel and Start Fresh Survey 1 2
  1. Start Fresh Survey. A new field survey.
  2. A saved survey. Tap to keep adding to it.

Park on a spot you can find again

Every field survey needs a benchmark before it records. Park on something you can find again, such as a gate corner or a culvert headwall: the same spot as your field benchmark. Lower the cutting edge to the ground.

Whole-field survey screen before recording: 0 pts top left, a banner Armed — tap Start in sidebar to record, and the right-hand column Start, Benchmark (0), Swath: 40 ft, Set A, Cancel

The same recording screen; Finish & Save (18) is near the bottom of the right-hand column, above Cancel
  1. Finish & Save. Ends the survey.

Type a name for the survey

The window shows how many points you collected. Tap the name box and type the field's name, so you can find the survey later.

Save Field Survey window: 23 points collected, Saved as: contour_<name>.json, a name box, and buttons Discard, Save & Return and Save & Use Now 1
  1. Survey name. Use the field name.

Tap Save & Use Now

Tap Save & Use Now, the wide button bottom right. In app v1.5.4, it and Save & Return do the same thing: they save the survey and go back to the Home screen. The contours aren't drawn yet.

The same Save Field Survey window; Save & Use Now is the wide button bottom right 1
  1. Save & Use Now. Saves the survey and returns to Home.

Check the survey was saved

You should see the Home screen, with a message along the bottom: Survey saved: … and the file name.

Home screen after saving: a dark bar along the bottom reads Survey saved: contour_survey_2026-10-16_22_04.json
  1. Survey saved. The field survey is on the tablet.

Tap Saved Survey

To draw contours from it, open Contour Tiling again (Start Contour Tiling, steps 1 to 5). In the field surface window, tap Saved Survey, the orange button on the left in the second row.

The field surface window; Saved Survey is the orange button on the left under Or use existing data 1
  1. Saved Survey. Your whole-field surveys.

Tap Use for Contours

A window called Load Saved Survey lists your field surveys. Tap Use for Contours on yours. The survey needs at least 10 points. The Contour Settings window opens next.

  1. Use for Contours. Builds the surface from this survey.

Draw the contours

Tap a Contour Interval

The Contour Settings window opens. Contour Interval is the height between two contour lines. Tap one of the square buttons: 1″, 2″, 3″ (chosen to start with), 6″ or 1 ft. Or type your own in Custom. In metric the buttons read 25, 50, 75, 150 and 300 mm.

A smaller interval gives more lines, closer together. The line under the slider estimates how many. Over 200, it warns Many contours — consider a larger interval. Over 500, Generate is greyed out until you pick a larger interval.

Contour Settings window: DEM 483x360 cells, Elev range 9.97 ft; Contour Interval buttons 1, 2, 3 (chosen, green), 6 inches and 1 ft; Custom inches box; Smoothing slider at Medium; Estimated contours ~40 lines; Cancel and a green Generate button 1 2
  1. Contour Interval. 3″ is chosen here.
  2. Estimated contours. About 40 lines.

Smoothing rounds off small wiggles in the lines. Leave it on Medium unless the lines look ragged.

Tap Generate

Tap the green Generate button in the bottom right corner. A moment of Generating contours..., then the contours are drawn on the map.

No lines at all? No contours were generated from this surface. Try a different interval or surface. The surface is too flat or too sparse for that interval: pick a smaller one, or use a denser surface.

The same Contour Settings window; Generate is the green button bottom right 1
  1. Generate. Draws the contours.

Drive onto the contour your tile should follow

The contours are drawn across the field in blue, and the dark Ready to Survey card appears. The contour nearest the machine lights up bright teal: that's the one you'll follow. You pick it by driving to it, not from a list. The coloured bar across the top, the lightbar, shows which side of it you are.

Contour Tiling survey screen: blue contour lines over the field, a teal highlighted contour near the machine, a lightbar of coloured cells across the top, red chevrons, and the Ready to Survey card with START SURVEY
  1. Ready to Survey. Drive onto the teal contour while this card shows.
  2. Lightbar. The lit cells show which side of the contour you are, and how far off. One green cell in the middle means you're on it.

Tap START SURVEY

Tap the green START SURVEY button on the card. Recording starts and the highlighted contour locks: the guidance won't jump to a neighbouring line if you wander.

The same screen; the green START SURVEY button is at the bottom of the dark card
  1. START SURVEY. Starts recording and locks this contour.

Drive the tile route

A red banner at the top reads Recording Survey. Steer to keep the lightbar centred. The number under it is how far off the contour you are, and the red chevrons on the map point the way back. There are no up/down depth arrows here: you're laying out where the line goes, the depth comes from the design.

The route you drive becomes the tile line, not the ideal contour. Hold the contour where you want the tile level, and ease downhill toward the outlet where you need fall. A wobbly survey gives a wobbly tile. The lightbar scale is fixed: 3″ cells next to the line, getting coarser (up to 5 ft) the farther off you are.

Contour survey recording: a red banner Recording Survey (3 pts), the locked teal contour, the lightbar with cells lit to one side and 275 inches under it, red chevrons pointing left, and a STOP pill
  1. Recording Survey. Points recorded so far.
  2. Distance off the contour. 275″ here: steer back toward it.

Tap STOP at the far end

Tap the red STOP button in the dark pill near the bottom of the map. Stopping and starting again picks the nearest contour afresh, so drive back onto yours before you restart.

The same recording screen; the dark pill near the bottom of the map reads 3 pts and STOP
  1. STOP. Ends the survey.

Tap Save

A window called Save Survey? opens. The name ends in (Contour Tiling); tap the box to type your own (typing). A route held exactly on a contour shows Grade 0.000%. Tap the green Save button.

Save Survey? window: Points 55, Dist 709 ft, Grade 0.000 %, Survey Name Survey 10-16 2152 (Contour Tiling), Discard and a green Save 1 2
  1. Save. On to the water flow question.
  2. Survey Name. Tap to change it.

Tap Yes, Correct or No, Reverse It

Water Flow Direction asks you to confirm water flows from where you started toward where you stopped. Started at the top end: tap Yes, Correct. Started at the outlet: tap No, Reverse It.

Water Flow Direction window with a blue Yes, Correct button and an outlined No, Reverse It button 1 2
  1. Yes, Correct. The outlet is where you stopped.
  2. No, Reverse It. The outlet is where you started.

Tap Create Design

Tile Parameters opens. Slide Target Depth and Min Grade % to your numbers, as in Standard Tiling. Then tap the blue Create Design button.

Tile Parameters window: Target Depth and Min Grade % sliders, and a blue Create Design button 1
  1. Create Design. Opens Tile Design on your route.

Check the design

Tile Design opens on the route you drove. The ground line is flat, because you held one elevation. Min Grade gives the tile its fall, so it runs deeper toward the outlet. Change the depth window or grade on the cards if you need to (Tile Design).

Tile Design built from a contour route: a flat ground line, the tile line falling at minimum grade between the depth lines, and a Required Start Depth tag of 44 inches
  1. Required Start Depth. Plow depth at the outlet: 44″ here.

Tap Apply Design

Tap the blue Apply Design button in the bottom right corner.

The same Tile Design screen; Apply Design is in the bottom right corner
  1. Apply Design. Bottom right corner.

Name the design and tap Save

The name starts as Contour Tiling with the date and time. Change it if you like, then tap the green Save. The design keeps the contour you followed, so the install screen can draw it.

Save Design window: Name this design before implementing:, name Contour Tiling 10-16 21:54, Cancel and a green Save 1
  1. Save. Saves the design and opens the install screen.

Install along your route

Installing works like Standard Tiling for depth (Install the tile): start at the outlet with the plow at the Required Start Depth, the same Start checks, the same paced descent and Rock Hit Detection. The difference is steering.

  • The lightbar steers you back along the route you drove. Keep it centred.
  • The contour you followed is drawn as a reference line.
  • There are no up/down depth arrows on the map: depth shows only in the Grade / Depth guide, and the plow holds it (or you do, on a Guidance Only Kit or Ditch Assist Lite).
Contour tile install under way: a lightbar across the top with one green cell at 0 inches, the orange saved route, and the depth readout Current Tgt 0.0 ON GRADE
  1. Lightbar. One green cell at 0″: you're on your saved route.
  2. Depth readout. The only depth readout here.

Reopen a contour design or job

To install a contour-tile design you saved before:

Tap Load Existing Design

Open Contour Tiling as at the top of this page (Start Contour Tiling, steps 1 to 4). In the Contour Tiling window, tap Load Existing Design, the third choice.

Contour Tiling window; Load Existing Design is the third choice 1
  1. Load Existing Design. Your saved designs.

Tap Implement on your design

The Load window lists all your saved line designs, not only contour ones. Find the one named Contour Tiling… (or what you named it) and tap its Implement button.

Load window, Designs tab: the top row Contour Tiling 10-16 21:54 with Edit and Implement buttons, then Tiling 10-16 21:17 and older designs
  1. Implement. Opens the install screen with this design.
  2. Your design. Name, grade, design type and time saved.

Tap Calibrate on another day

Calibrate GPS? appears. On another day, tap Calibrate and calibrate on the field benchmark (Coming back: calibrate on the benchmark). Same day, same base setup: tap Skip. The route and the contour come back together.

Install screen with the Calibrate GPS? window on top: Skip and an orange Calibrate button
  1. Calibrate. On another day, or after the base moved.
  • Design from a saved route: tap Load Existing Survey instead, then the same Water Flow Direction and Tile Design steps.
  • Finish a line you started: the orange Resume button on the Grade screen, with nothing loaded (Resume a job). If the contour can't be found you'll see Contour reference unavailable — steering off the saved route.; carry on, the lightbar still follows your route.
  • Contour tile design — use the wizard on Implement means that design file has lost its saved contour, so it can't be steered. Survey and design the route again, and tell Ditch Assist support.
LiDAR & Mapping, start to finish Five steps. While the tablet has internet: 1, draw the field boundary on the map, up to 800 acres; 2, the app fetches public LiDAR elevation data, USGS 3DEP in the US or NRCan HRDEM where it covers Canada. No internet needed from here: 3, the tablet itself works out flow lines, depressions and ponding and saves them with the field; 4, the Drainage Planner turns the flow lines into a drainage plan you save; 5, in the field on the control module Wi-Fi, add the layers from Map Layers, and Levee, Contour Tiling and Contour-Guided Terracing use the saved LiDAR DEM. LiDAR & Mapping Needs internet Draw the field Up to 800 acres 1 Fetch LiDAR Public elevation data 2 No internet needed Tablet maps the water Flow, low spots, ponding 3 Plan drains Drainage Planner 4 Use it in the field Layers and saved DEM 5

Prepare the field on internet Wi-Fi first. In the field, on the control module's Wi-Fi, Contour Tiling loads it from Saved LiDAR DEM with no internet needed.

  1. Draw the field. Tap its corners on the map, up to 800 acres. Steps 1 and 2 need internet: farm Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot, not the control module.
  2. Fetch LiDAR. Public elevation data: USGS 3DEP in the lower 48 states, NRCan HRDEM where it covers Canada.
  3. Tablet maps the water. Flow lines, depressions and ponding are worked out on the tablet and saved with the field. Nothing is sent away.
  4. Plan drains. The Drainage Planner turns the flow lines into a plan you save.
  5. Use it in the field. No internet needed. Add the layers from Map Layers, again after each app restart. Levee, Contour Tiling and Contour-Guided Terracing load the saved LiDAR DEM.

If something goes wrong

  • Generating contours needs a controller or the simulator. is a standing reminder under the surface buttons. If you aren't connected, Generate answers You can survey a field with a Bluetooth GNSS receiver, but following contours requires a connection to your Ditch Assist control module… (on a Reach that isn't activated yet, the activation steps open instead). Connect to the control module, an activated Reach or the simulator. See Levee & Contour problems.
  • No contours, or ragged ones: Levee & Contour problems.
  • The wrong contour highlighted, or the zone lost on resume: Contour Tiling on the fix page.
  • Saved LiDAR DEM list empty or LiDAR won't fetch: LiDAR problems.
  • Start won't arm, design warnings, wrong outlet depth: Tiling problems.
  • The ditch designer (Slope-IQ Design) opened instead of Tile Design: Cancel, survey again with START SURVEY, and call support on 1-833-DITCH-AS if it happens on the guided path.
