Practise with the simulator

A step-by-step practice session on the app's built-in simulator: start the pretend machine, survey a ditch, let Slope-IQ design it, grade it, set and use a benchmark, pick the job up again and stop. Every tap has its own step and picture. No machine, Wi-Fi or internet needed.

In the app Home › any workflow card › Simulate

The simulator is a pretend machine built into the Ditch Assist® app. It has a perfect GPS position and drives itself from the moment you tap Simulate, so every screen works with no machine, receiver or Wi-Fi. Use it to learn the app at the kitchen table before your first real job. Support staff use it too, to show you a screen over the phone.

This page is a practice session. Every tap is its own step, with a picture of where to tap. Work down it once and your first day in the field will look familiar.

Before you start

  • The Ditch Assist app is installed and you have opened it once (First launch).
  • The tablet is charged, or plugged in.
  • About an hour. You can stop after any part and carry on another time.
  • No machine, receiver, Wi-Fi or internet is needed. Without internet the map may be plain grey. That doesn't matter for practice.

Part 1: Start the pretend machine (2 minutes)

Tap Ditching

On the Home screen, tap Ditching. It's the first big square, top left, with a picture of a winding ditch.

A window opens called Ditching — Connect.

Home screen: the Ditch Assist logo above nine large squares in three rows. The first square, top left, reads Ditching, Surface Ditch, with a picture of a winding ditch. A column of big buttons runs down the right-hand side: Home, Survey, Grade, Settings, Manual and an orange Pre-Flight Checks.
  1. Ditching. First square, top left. Tap it.

If a window called Start New Session? opens instead, something from an earlier session is still loaded. Tap Start New at its bottom right. Saved files are not deleted.

Window titled Start New Session? saying this will clear the active survey, design, grading progress and coverage data, and that saved files on disk are not deleted. Buttons Cancel and Start New.
  1. Start New. Clears what's loaded. Your saved files stay.

If the window asks What would you like to do? straight away, the simulator is already running. Go to Part 2.

Tap Simulate

Tap Simulate. It's the second button in the window, under the big green Connect button. It's white, with blue writing and a small bug symbol.

The window changes to System Check. The app now pretends it is connected to a machine.

Window titled Ditching — Connect: Connect to Controller, then four buttons from the top: a green Connect, a white Simulate with blue writing, a white Bluetooth GPS, and Manual Options in small green writing 1
  1. Simulate. Second button, under the green Connect.

Tapped Connect by mistake? The app looks for a machine for a few seconds. Then a red box says Could not detect a Ditch Assist module. Connect tablet WiFi to the module and try again. That is expected: nothing is connected. Tap Simulate. It's now the second button under the red box.

The same window with a red box at the top: Could not detect a Ditch Assist module. Connect tablet WiFi to the module and try again. Below it the green Connect button, then Simulate, Bluetooth GPS and Manual Options 1
  1. Simulate. Still there, under the red message and the green Connect.

Ditch Assist Lite shows Emlid Reach at the top of this window instead of Connect. Simulate is the button under it.

Wait for three green rows

Don't tap anything for about 10 seconds. The pretend GPS goes through the same stages as a real one.

At first the bottom row, GPS Accuracy, reads FLOAT — grading accuracy reduced in orange. FLOAT is a GPS position that is close, but not exact yet.

System Check window with three rows. Controller Connected, Simulator active, with a green tick. GPS Signal, 14 satellites. GPS Accuracy, FLOAT — grading accuracy reduced, in orange. 1
  1. FLOAT, in orange. Not ready yet. Keep waiting.

  1. Continue. Bottom of the window.

Part 2: Survey a pretend ditch (10 minutes)

In the field you drive the line the water will take, with the implement raised, and the app records the ground. Here the pretend machine drives for you.

Tap New Survey

Tap New Survey, the first of the three choices. It has a small green NEW symbol.

The window closes and the Survey screen opens.

What would you like to do? with the first choice, New Survey, Record a new survey route, and Load Survey below it 1
  1. New Survey. First choice, with the NEW symbol.

Tapped Load Survey or Load Design by mistake? A list of saved files opens. Close it with Cancel or the X, tap Ditching on Home again and choose New Survey.

If a Set Blade Height window appears, tap Enter Manually

The first survey on a tablet asks for the blade height: how high the cutting edge sits off the ground with the implement raised. Tap Enter Manually, the button on the left.

No window? The blade height is already set. Go to step 5.

Window titled Set Blade Height: Your blade height hasn't been set yet. This measurement is required for accurate survey elevations. Buttons Enter Manually on the left, Auto Measure on the right, and Skip for Now below. 1
  1. Enter Manually. Left-hand button.

Don't tap Auto Measure on the simulator. It measures a real implement going up and down, so here it gives a meaningless number.

Type 36

A box appears, and number keys open along the bottom of the screen. Tap 3, then 6. (Typing on the tablet.)

For practice any number works. In the field you type the height you measured.

Set Blade Height window with an empty box labelled Blade Height (in) and a green Save button. Number keys fill the bottom half of the screen.
  1. The box. Blade Height, in inches.
  2. Number keys. Tap 3, then 6.

Tap Save

Tap Save, the green button to the right of the box. The window closes.

Set Blade Height window with 36 typed in the box, the unit in, and a green Save button to the right 1
  1. Save. Right of the box.

Check the Ready to Survey window

A dark window sits in the middle of the map, called Ready to Survey.

Survey screen over a satellite map. A dark window in the middle reads Ready to Survey with three green ticks, Connected, GPS: RTK, RTK: Stable, then Drive to the start of your drain route and a big green START SURVEY button.
  1. Three green ticks. Ready to record.

Tap START SURVEY

Tap START SURVEY, the big bright green button in the dark window. The window disappears and recording starts.

In the field, line up on one end of the ditch first, with the implement raised.

Type the name Practice 1

The keyboard opens with a name already in the box, such as Survey 10-17 1539 (Ditching).

Press and hold the delete key until the box is empty. The delete key is at the top right of the keyboard, marked with an arrow and a cross. Then type Practice 1.

Starting practice names with "Practice" makes them easy to find and delete later.

  1. Delete key. Top right of the keyboard. Hold it down to clear the box.

Tap Save

Tap Save, the big green button under the name. You don't need to close the keyboard first.

A Slope-IQ™ window opens with a question.

Save Survey? window: Points 98, Dist 1072 ft, Grade 0.176 percent; Survey Name Practice 1; a red-outlined Discard button and a big green Save button 1
  1. Save. The big green button. Not Discard.

Tapped Discard? That throws this survey away. No harm done: tap START SURVEY and let it drive again.

Part 3: Let Slope-IQ design it (10 minutes)

Slope-IQ draws the bottom of the ditch through your survey: as little cut as possible, always draining to the outlet. It asks three questions first.

Tap Yes, that's correct

The first question is Water Flow Direction. It shows where you started (START, marked INLET) and where you stopped (END, marked OUTLET).

Tap Yes, that's correct, the green button.

Water Flow Direction, step 1 of 3: START INLET 808.59 ft, an arrow down, END OUTLET 806.70 ft. We detected you drove from the INLET to the OUTLET. Is this correct? A green Yes, that's correct button and a yellow-outlined No, it's reversed button. 1
  1. Yes, that's correct. The green button.

In the field, if you drove from the outlet end, tap No, it's reversed instead.

Tap Continue

The second question is Minimum Grade. 0.05% is standard for surface drainage, so leave it. Tap Continue.

The − and + buttons beside the number change it in steps of 0.01%.

Minimum Grade, step 2 of 3: 0.05% is standard for surface drainage. A minus button, 0.05%, a plus button, and a green Continue button 1
  1. Continue. Leave the grade at 0.05%.

Tap Create Design

Tap Create Design, the green button. The design appears.

Create Design, step 3 of 3: Ready to compute your best-fit design with 0.05% minimum grade, and a green Create Design button 1
  1. Create Design.

Look at your design

The chart shows the ground you drove as a dashed green line. The thick orange line is the design: the bottom of the finished ditch. The brown striped area between them is the soil to cut.

Slope-IQ Design screen. A large chart: a dashed green ground line, a thick orange design line below it and brown striping between them. Six boxes under the chart: Depth Offset 0.0, Min Grade 0.05%, Bottom Width 8 ft, Side Slope 6.0:1, Min Depth 0, Max Depth 18. A strip at the bottom: Grade 0.245%, Max Cut 17.5 inches, Length 1072 ft, Cut Vol 240.6 cubic yards, Est. Passes: 9 at 2 inches a pass. A green Implement Slope button in the bottom right corner.
  1. Max Cut. The deepest cut: 17.5 inches here.
  2. Est. Passes. 9 passes at 2 inches each.

Tap + under DEPTH OFFSET, twice

DEPTH OFFSET is the first box in the row of boxes under the chart, on the left. Tap its + button twice. Each tap lowers the whole design by half an inch.

Slope-IQ Design screen after two taps on plus: Depth Offset reads 1.0 inch, Max Cut 18.5 inches and Est. Passes 10 in the strip
  1. DEPTH OFFSET. First box. Its + is on the right.
  2. Est. Passes. Now 10.

Tap − under DEPTH OFFSET, twice

  1. Save & Implement.

If the small window disappears, you tapped outside it. Tap Implement Slope again.

Tap Enable Auto-Nudge

A wide window opens called Auto-Nudge Mode. Auto-Nudge™ splits a deep cut into passes, so the blade never takes more than Max Cut Per Pass at once: 2.0 inches here.

Tap Enable Auto-Nudge, the green button on the right. The Grade screen opens.

Auto-Nudge Mode window across the Grade screen: Max Cut Per Pass with minus and plus buttons around 2.0 inches, Estimated 9 passes at deepest point, a white Use Manual Nudge button on the left and a green Enable Auto-Nudge button on the right

  2. Enable Auto-Nudge. The green button on the right.

Tapped Use Manual Nudge? No harm. On the Grade screen, tap the Auto Nudge switch in the bar across the top to turn it on.

Part 4: Grade it (15 minutes)

On a Full Automation Kit, Start hands the blade over to the app. On the simulator nothing moves: the pretend blade follows the target.

Look at the Grade screen

Down the right-hand side: a big green Start button, then Reset, then an AUTO-NUDGE group that shows which pass you're on.

Left of those buttons is the depth guide. The tip of the black triangle is your cutting edge.

Part 5: Practise a benchmark (10 minutes)

A benchmark is a spot you can drive back to, like the field entrance. The app saves its position and elevation. When you come back on another day, you park on it and calibrate, so today's GPS heights match last time's. Here you practise the taps. When you need one in real work: Benchmarks and calibration.

Tap BM

Tap BM, the small square in the bar across the top of the screen. It sits between the Wi-Fi symbol and the spanner.

A window opens called Calibrate Elevation.

What the simulator can't show you

The simulator works every screen, but it isn't a machine. Learn these on the real thing:

In the simulatorOn the real machine
No hydraulics. Pre-Flight Checks shows no Raise / Lower test while simulating.Test that Raise lifts and Lower drops before your first job (Test raise and lower).
The GPS is always perfect, and the GPS checks on Start are skipped.FLOAT, DGPS and dropouts only happen on a real receiver. Wait for RTK Fixed (How RTK works).
Auto Measure blade height gives a meaningless number. The pretend antenna doesn't go up and down with an implement.Measure it with a tape, or use Auto Measure with the implement (Blade height).
You can't steer onto a benchmark, so Part 5 ends with Calibrate Anyway (5s avg).Drive onto the benchmark until the card turns green, lower the cutting edge, then calibrate.
It doesn't unlock LiDAR & Mapping or contour generation.A one-time connection to a real control module, DIG module or activated Ditch Assist Lite receiver unlocks them.
No real machine: no speed, no soil, no valve tuning.Tuning is done on the machine (Grading is slow or chasing).

The simulator works in every workflow on the Home screen, and in Ditch Assist Lite mode. Surveys, designs, jobs and benchmarks you make while simulating are saved like real ones. While it runs, Pre-Flight Checks shows Simulator with a purple warning triangle, as a reminder that nothing real is connected.
