Logs & Diagnostics

Chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.

In the app Manual › Logs & Diagnostics

The app records detailed logs of every session, including grading events, GPS quality, controller communication, and crashes. Logs help support diagnose issues quickly.

Where logs go:

  • /storage/emulated/0/Documents/DitchAssist/logs/ (when storage permission is granted).
  • App-internal directory (when permission is denied — fall-back).

Log files:

  • One file per day, named ditchassist_YYYY-MM-DD.log. Each app session writes SESSION START / END markers inside the day's file, with a timestamp session ID, device info, and app version.
  • Files rotate with a time suffix at 2 MB; retention is capped at 5 files / 10 MB total (oldest deleted automatically).
  • A diagnostic snapshot every 60 seconds, plus on triggered events (grading start/stop, RTK loss, errors).
  • Crash dumps are appended to the active log, then captured on next launch.

To send logs to support (preferred):

Tap Settings → LOGS → Log Files → Send. The Send Logs dialog uploads the logs directly to Ditch Assist support over the internet. What an upload contains: GPS positions and elevations from recent sessions, device model and Android version, WiFi network names, survey/job/field names you typed, and the operator name you enter. Files are stored privately on US-based servers that only Ditch Assist support staff can access, and are used only for troubleshooting. The first upload requires ticking the one-time I understand what will be sent consent checkbox. If the tablet has no internet the upload fails; the app then opens the Android share sheet so you can hand the file to email or messaging instead — but the dialog stays open with an amber No internet — the logs could NOT be uploaded warning, because a shared file only reaches support if you finish sending it in that app. Once the tablet is online, tap Retry to upload directly. Only a green Sent! means the file reached Ditch Assist.

To share logs another way:

  1. Tap Settings → LOGS → Log Files → Share.
  2. The app concatenates ALL stored log files into one text file and opens the Android share sheet. Pick email, drive, messaging — anywhere you can attach a file. (There is no per-session picker.)

To clear logs:

Tap Settings → LOGS → Log Files → Clear All. Confirms before deleting.

Log levels:

  • Debug — all activity including GPS detail. Files get big fast.
  • Info (default) — connections, survey events, grading.
  • Warning — RTK loss, stale GPS, errors.
  • Error — failures only.

Set the level in Settings → LOGS → Log Level.

The Ditch Assist Data Viewer (PC tool)

Your dealer or support can provide the Ditch Assist Data Viewer — a single HTML file that runs entirely on a PC, nothing uploaded (internet needed for map tiles only). Connect the tablet to the PC over USB, copy the whole Documents/DitchAssist folder, and drag-drop it onto the page. It views, maps (satellite background), and cross-links every saved grading job, survey, design, field survey, levee job, LiDAR field, and log session; builds printable reports (browser print-to-PDF) for compliance, record-keeping, or proof-of-work; and exports points CSV, combined KML, and GeoJSON. An imperial/metric toggle is included.
