Surveying along the contour

Contour Tiling chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.

In the app Manual › Contour Tiling › Surveying along the contour

Once the contours are drawn, the survey is about following the one you want.

Auto-highlight

As you drive, the app highlights the nearest contour in bright teal. The other contours stay a faint blue. Drive toward the contour your tile should follow and it lights up. You don't pick it from a list — you pick it by driving near it, the same way the Levee tools work.

Lock on Start

When you tap Start to begin recording, the highlighted contour locks. From that moment the guidance tracks that one line and won't hop to a neighbor if you wander — so a single pass stays on a single contour. (If you stop and start again, the app re-picks the nearest contour to where you are.)

Steering — horizontal only

While recording, you get:

  • A steering lightbar across the top of the screen. Lit cells show which side of the contour you've drifted to; steer the other way to re-center.
  • Steering chevrons on the map pointing the direction to steer to get back on the line.

There are no up/down depth arrows during a contour survey. You're laying out where the line goes on the ground — the depth comes later, from the tile design. Keep the lightbar centered and drive a steady pace.

The profile chart still fills in along the bottom so you can watch the elevation along your route.

The route is what counts

The app records your actual driven path. If you held the contour perfectly, your route is a level line. If you eased downhill toward the outlet to pick up fall, your route reflects that. Either way, the route you drove — not the ideal contour — becomes the tile design. Drive it the way you want the tile laid.

Loading a route you already drove

If you surveyed the tile line on an earlier trip, choose Load Existing Survey in the wizard instead of generating new contours. The tile design dialog opens on that saved route.
