Setting the benchmark

Land Forming chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.

In the app Manual › Land Forming › Setting the benchmark

The design file gives you elevation targets in survey coordinates. Your GPS reports altitude in geoid-corrected meters. The benchmark offset bridges the two. Get this right and every cut/fill number is right; get it wrong and the whole field is off by the same amount.

Method 1 — AGD imported benchmark (best)

If the file has a 0MB master benchmark, it appears as a Design BM row in the Calibrate Elevation sheet.

  1. Tap the BM badge in the top stats bar (or accept the prompt that appears after import).
  2. In the reference-row list, find the row tagged Design BM — rows are sorted nearest first.
  3. Tap it. The sheet switches to a drive-to card showing live distance.
  4. Drive to the BM. The card updates:
    • "Drive 23 m to the benchmark" (more than 3 m away)
    • "Almost there" (within 3 m)
    • "On the benchmark — lower blade and calibrate" (within 0.5 m)
  5. When the card turns green, lower the implement so the cutting edge rests on the BM (or on bare ground if there is no physical pin), hold still, and tap Calibrate (5s avg).
  6. The app averages 5 seconds of RTK GPS, computes the offset, and applies it.

Method 2 — Zero-cut/fill point (XYZP without imported BMs)

Drive to a point on the field where the proposed surface matches the existing surface (zero cut, zero fill — the chart and overlays will be neutral there). Lower the implement to the ground and tap the Loaded design row's Calibrate button (5s avg).

Method 3 — Advanced (known elevation)

For advanced users. Open Advanced at the bottom of the sheet, type the known elevation you're standing on, and confirm. (To re-enter a previously recorded offset directly, use Settings → SURVEY → Benchmark Offset → Open calibration, which lands on the same sheet.)

A successful calibration shows:

  • The BM badge changes from grey to green.
  • The sheet's status line names what you calibrated to (e.g. "Calibrated to benchmark ... just now").
  • The cut/fill heatmap colors snap into agreement with what you see on the ground.
