Importing the design
Land Forming chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.
In the app Manual › Land Forming › Importing the design
When you tap Import XYZP File or Import AGD File in the wizard, the Land Forming Design dialog opens first. Tap Select Design File (XYZ / XYZP / AGD) to open the file picker and pick one file. After a successful parse the button relabels Change File.
The dialog parses the file, showing a small spinner while it works. Once parsed, it displays:
- File name and a format badge (XYZP / XYZ / AGD / LandXML).
- Points — total grade-point count.
- Area — coverage area, in hectares in metric mode and acres in imperial. Since Land Forming prompts you to switch to metric on entry, you will normally see hectares.
- Elev Range — span between lowest and highest design elevation.
- Min/Max Elev — actual elevation values.
- Benchmarks — count if the file has imported BMs (AGD only).
- Sections — count if the file has boundary loops (AGD only).
- Avg Cut / Avg Fill — averages across the design (XYZP only).
If the file has no proposed elevations (XYZ format), a warning note tells you cut/fill overlay and Auto-Nudge are not available.
Tap Apply Design to commit. The dialog enters a "Triangulating surface from N points" overlay with a percent progress ring. The app builds a triangulated surface (DEM) the blade can interpolate against. Time estimates:
- Under 5,000 points → a few seconds.
- 5,000–15,000 → up to a minute.
- 15,000–30,000 → a few minutes.
- 30,000+ → several minutes. Designs over 50,000 points are not recommended.
When the DEM is built, the dialog closes and you land on the Grade screen.
On the map, you see:
- The cut/fill heatmap of the design (red = cut needed, blue = fill needed) — only present when an existing-terrain surface is available (XYZP, or LandXML with a terrain file).
- For LandXML imports: a rasterized elevation overlay (blue → light blue → green → yellow → red, low to high) drawn at 70% opacity over the cut/fill heatmap but under your track and coverage layers.
- Section boundaries from AGD as dotted pink polylines (they trace the boundary loop end-to-end).
- AGD
0MBbenchmarks as cyan flag markers. - Your machine as a green arrow icon, oriented by heading.
LandXML is a two-file flow. The Import LandXML Surface dialog has two steps: 1. Design Surface (required — tap Select Design XML) and 2. Existing Terrain (optional — tap Select Terrain XML (Optional)). Without a terrain file, real-time GPS is used as the existing surface and only the elevation-colored TIN overlay shows on the map. With a terrain file, the Apply button reads Apply Design + Terrain, the cut/fill heatmap is enabled, and the Auto-Nudge prompt fires after apply — just like an XYZP import. If a file contains multiple surfaces, each picker shows its own surface dropdown.
3D TIN preview controls (LandXML import). While the LandXML import dialog is open, the 3D preview surface is interactive. Drag with one finger to rotate the surface; pinch (or scroll) to zoom. The preview is shaded with a fixed sun direction. Use it to spot-check that the imported surface matches expectations — a wrong CRS commonly shows up as a wildly stretched or flipped surface.
