The completion grid — marking finished areas

Excavator chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.

Why the grid exists

When you grade with a scraper, the app tracks coverage automatically — wherever the blade has been, the heatmap fills in. With an excavator that doesn't work — the bucket is being swung around, lifted to empty, moved without digging — so the app can't tell from GPS motion alone where you've actually finished the cut.

The completion grid solves this by letting you mark cells as done by tapping them as you finish them.

What the grid looks like

When you import a LandXML design into Excavator, a grid of thin white outlines appears on the map covering the design extent. New jobs default to 11 m cells; adjust the default in Settings or the per-job slider in the LandXML import dialog (3-30 m). The chosen size is locked into the saved job so existing marks do not shift.

Three cell states you'll see while working:

  • Unmarked cell — thin white outline, transparent fill. The DEM colour underneath shows through.
  • Marked cell (done) — semi-transparent green fill with a bolder green outline. Your "I'm done here" mark.
  • Current cell — the cell your machine is physically in right now, drawn with an amber outline. This is your "next tap at this position will hit this cell" indicator.

The HUD chip — your tally

A small chip sits at the top-right of the map, just below the stats bar:

  • Before you start marking — reads "Tap a grid cell to mark complete".
  • Once you start marking — reads "N cells complete" in green, where N is the count.

If no design is loaded, the chip is hidden.

Gestures — how to mark and unmark

The grid responds to map taps and long-presses:

  • Tap an unmarked cell → it fills green. The cell is now marked complete.
  • Tap a marked cell → the green clears. The cell is now unmarked again. (Tap-to-toggle — you don't have to remember which gesture does which.)
  • Long-press any cell → always unmarks. Use this when you can see green on a cell but you're not sure of current state, or when a stray tap landed somewhere you didn't want. Long-press is the safe "definitely clear this" gesture.

You can mark any cell, anywhere on the design — you don't have to mark the cell you're standing in. Tap the cell ahead of you, behind you, or off to the side as your workflow demands.

The amber-outline current cell

The amber-outlined cell is purely visual feedback — "this is the cell I'm in right now". It lets you confirm before tapping that the cell your finger will hit (or the cell at your current position) is the one you intend to mark. Useful in a cab where you're glancing between the controls and the screen.

Clearing all marks — the Clear Marks button

Once you've marked at least one cell, an outlined red Clear Marks button appears in the sidebar (in the same spot the Reset button would sit for other modes).

Tap Clear Marks → a confirmation dialog appears titled "Clear all marks?" with body text "This removes every completion-grid mark on the current design. The design itself stays loaded." Two buttons:

  • Cancel — keeps your marks.
  • Clear (red) — wipes every mark on the current design.

The design itself stays loaded after Clear Marks — only the green marks go away. To clear the design too, use the standard Reset button (which clears the entire job, marks and design and benchmark and everything).

Performance

The grid is cached so panning the map and recording GPS positions don't trigger a redraw — only marking, unmarking, or crossing into a new cell does. Very large designs (more than 8000 cells, e.g. a 10 km × 10 km job) automatically switch to drawing only the marked cells plus your current cell, so the map stays responsive on a tablet.

Saving and resuming

All marked cells are saved with the job. When you Resume a job from Excavation → Resume Job, every mark is right where you left it.
