The field boundary
Levee & Contour Guidance chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.
In the app Manual › Levee & Contour Guidance › The field boundary
Before the contours generate, the app wants to know the edge of your field. A boundary keeps the contour lines inside the field — without one, contours can run off along roads, ditches, and neighboring ground, which clutters the map and wastes processing.
Automatic boundary
When you survey a field or import a point file, the app traces a boundary around your points for you and shows it on the map as a cyan outline. A card appears at the bottom with three choices:
- Use this boundary — accept the traced outline.
- Draw — discard it and draw your own (see below).
- Skip — generate over the full extent of the data with no clipping.
The map stays live while you decide, so you can pinch and pan to inspect the traced outline before choosing.

Drawing a boundary by hand
When you import a GeoTIFF or load a saved LiDAR DEM, the app asks plainly whether you want to draw a boundary or use the full extent. If you draw:
- The map becomes a drawing surface. Tap around the edge of your field to drop corner points.
- The running outline shows in orange as you tap.
- Tap Undo to remove the last corner. Tap Done once you have at least three corners.
- If the shape crosses over itself (a bow-tie), the app rejects it and asks you to fix it — keep the outline simple, no crossing lines.
(In the LiDAR & Mapping workflow, the boundary you draw there is also the area that gets fetched — draw it around just the ground you need before saving the DEM.)
Editing the boundary later
Once contours exist, the sidebar shows Edit Boundary and Clear Boundary. Edit reopens drawing mode seeded with the current outline so you can refine it; the contours regenerate when you finish. Clear removes the boundary and regenerates over the full extent.
