Surveying a field by driving

Levee & Contour Guidance chapter of the Ditch Assist app manual. The same text is in the app under Manual.

In the app Manual › Levee & Contour Guidance › Surveying a field by driving

Survey New Field (also reached as Drive to Map) records ground elevation as you drive, so the app can build the surface and contours from your own track.

To survey a field:

  1. From the Levee wizard or source panel, tap Survey New Field.
  2. Drop a benchmark first. The app requires one before it will record — tap Drop Benchmark Here, name it, and hold still while it averages for 5 seconds. Pick a spot you can find again later (a gate corner, a post).
  3. Tap Start in the sidebar. The screen begins recording, dropping a breadcrumb dot every time you move the logging distance (set by Survey Interval in Settings).
  4. Drive the field back and forth to cover it like you would mowing or spraying — the more evenly you cover it, the better the surface. Watch the point counter climb.
  5. If you need to capture a specific spot between breadcrumbs (a low spot, an inlet), tap Log Point Here to drop one right where you are. Log Point Here still respects the RTK gate — if RTK accuracy is currently below your sensitivity threshold, the app shows Waiting for accurate fix instead of logging. Drop the RTK Sensitivity to Low temporarily if you need to log under degraded RTK.
  6. Tap Pause any time to stop logging without ending the survey; tap Resume to keep going.
  7. When the field is covered, tap Finish & Save (N) (the N is your current point count).

Saving the survey:

The save screen offers three choices:

  • Discard — throw the points away.
  • Save & Return — write the survey to disk to use or resume later, and return. (The button reads just Save when the screen wasn't entered from a workflow.)
  • Save & Use Now — save the survey and go straight into building contours from it.

Gaps in your trail

If RTK accuracy drops while you record (and the RTK Filter is on), the app stops dropping breadcrumbs until accuracy returns, and leaves a visible gap in the trail. The gap shows you exactly which stretch did not get logged so you can drive back over it. A "Waiting for RTK" banner tells you logging is paused on quality, not crashed.

Resuming a survey

If saved surveys already exist when you open the Field Survey screen, the app offers to resume one (keep adding points to it) or start fresh. Resuming carries the original benchmarks forward so the whole field stays in one elevation frame across days.
